Day 53 - Lorella Springs to Towns River (Fri June 15th)

We needed to top up our fuel, as its quite scarce out here, hence the $3/L we had to pay at Lorella Springs.  We knew we could get fuel at Roper Bar, but wanted top up to be on the safe side.

This car for sale at Lorella Springs
Our first stop was The Southern Lost City, where we had a little walk around the edge of these wonderful sandstone formations. There is a 2km easy walking trail around the Lost City. We didn't do this as Cam was asleep in the car, and we were planning on going to The Western Lost City, which is reported to be the most spectacular of the two. There is free camping available here, they have pit toilets, and each site has a fire pit and a timber table.

Back on the bumpy road, and we were headed for Butterfly Springs, we called in here for lunch and a swim. This is another free bush camp spot, with pit toilets. The waterhole is a short walk from the camp sites, and was chilly but refreshing.

We got a move on, as we wanted to see the Western Lost City, then find somewhere further up the road to camp. To access The Western Lost City, you need to call into the Ranger Station and get the key to the gate, and information on the 4wd track and national park.

The ranger station is just past the airstrip, where we came across this fellow. The kids enjoyed giving him a pat.

We arrived at the Ranger Station about 2pm, all keen to do the 28km 4wd track into this awesome part of Limmen National Park, but the Rangers were nowhere to be found. Eventually we spoke to some women who lived at the Ranger Station, they didn't know where the Ranger was, but told us that they don't give the key out to tourists after 1pm. If we had of known this, we would of camped at nearby Butterfly Springs and made a day of seeing The Western Lost City.

Feeling a little disappointed we decided to push on and find somewhere to camp.

The road today was the worst we've traveled so far, our average speed today was 35km/hr. The kids are now asking 'when are we going back on the black road', 'we don't like the bumpy road dad'. Damon had to stop and tighten the screws for the spotlights, as they had rattled loose.

Driving through the bush fire was the highlight for the kids today, we wound the windows down so they could see the flames jumping up the trees.  There were heaps of eagles circling above, and sitting on the middle of the road, waiting for all the little bush creatures to come racing out of the bush.

About 3pm we arrived at Towns River and set up camp on the landing, overlooking the river. It's busy here, with people well set up with their boats. The landing where people camp is 50km upstream from the mouth. This is a free camp, and well known for good fishing, it looks like people come and set up for a while. They have pit toilets, and bush camping back from the creek as well. There are a lot of Salties here, we saw a few feeding on fish in the middle of the river. They come right up to the landing, so people need to be croc wise.

We sat and watched the sunset, thinking a rum would be nice about now.
