The Planned Trip

The Rough Plan Part #1       QLD -> NT -> WA

Having no major timescale and deadlines our rough plan is to  head north firstly, spend about a month to  tackle Cape York the best we can, then proceed west across to the Gulf country, maybe take the Burke Developmental Road to get to Karumba , and then  pretty much follow the Savannah Way with a few detours off the main track to explore as much of this region as possible.

Then we will head up into the NT and take the kids through Kakadu, we have seen quite a bit of the NT previously as we spent 7 months living in Darwin back in 2003, it will be good to visit again and see the changes.

After Darwin it's down into WA, a part of the country that Tracey and myself really love, especially the Kimberly. We have travelled nearly all of the WA coastline and parts of the Kimberly previously but this time we have more time and are doing it in a little more comfort, also this time we won’t have our 2 x dogs we took before but instead we have our 2 x kids.

Well the West Coast will probably take up the most of our time, firstly we will do the Gibb River Rd again but this time we will attempt to get out to Kalumburu and also visit Mitchell Falls.

Then it's onto Broome of course and I'd say we will head back up to Cape Leveque for a look again as we really enjoyed it up there last time, some great spots along the way out there.

After Broome it's down to one our favourite parts of the Aussie coast, Ningaloo!! We have heaps of camp spots we want to visit and set-up at, just kick back in this magic part of the world.  At present we are still deciding on a whether to do a detour into Karijini NP beforehand, our main problem we have is time as we know we could easily spend  6 months just doing the West coast of Australia.

Next step after dragging ourselves away from the Exmouth – Ningaloo region our plan is to head down to the Shark Bay area for some more station camping, we will then try our best to get out to Steep Point, it would be great to achieve getting to the most Northern Point aswell as the most Western Point of the Australian mainland on the one trip, see how we go……

Then it will be a slow meander down the rest of the coast towards Perth, calling into Kalbarri to see any changes since last time we were there back in 2003. After Kalbarri it’s onto Geraldton and to do the newish coast road down to Lancelin and then onto Perth.
We plan to spend a bit of time in Perth to catch up with family we have living there and old friends.  Then it’s onto Part 2 of our trip…………….

The Rough Plan Part #2       WA -> QLD

As we have travelled from Perth all the way back to Airlie Beach via the coast previously, we are contemplating  cutting across Australia diagonally to get home.  We have never really done too much travelling away from the coast line especially the remote central parts, so we may use this time as an excuse to do it.

So after spending time in Perth catching up with family and friends and also revisiting the SW corner of Western Australia,  the plan at this point, depending on when we actually leave and the temperatures throughout central Australia is to:

Head west to Kalgoorlie and then turn north up to Leonora, which will now be all new  territory and landscape which Tracey and I have never seen before.
From Leonora we plan to go north-east to Laverton and onto the Great Central Road,  follow this out through Warburton and Warakurna.

After Warakurna we’ll head East across to The Olgas & Uluru, hopefully spend  a few nights camping here out under the Outback sky and experience a sunset / sunrise over Ayres Rock.

Leaving this area we will head up to Alice Springs and at this point we haven’t  a rock solid path on which way we’ll head across western Queensland to home.
