Day 77 - Home Valley Station to Drysdale River Station (Mon July 9th)

First stop today was a lookout just past HVS called Telstra Hill, as it is a hot spot for mobile and internet service. It's quite funny watching everyone pull up and catch up on their phone and email messages.

We saw plenty of shredded tyres on the road today, and heard of 2 vehicle accidents (a roll over, and another ploughed into a tree). Not far from Drysdale River Station we passed a camper trailer that had a busted (snapped clean off) stub axle, they were waiting for the mechanic from Drysdale to come help them out. This would of put a hasty end to their trip.

The bush mechanic based at Drysdale Station is certaintly one very busy man!

The road deterioates once taking the Kalumburu turnoff, it's heavily corrugated, and took us about an hour to do the 59km to Drysdale River Station. We were expecting it to be a lot worse though, after hearing the horror stories about its condition. But if you drive to the conditions and take it easy, it's fine. Obviously not everyone does this though, hence the casualties we saw and heard off today.

Just turned onto the Kalumburu Road

Drysdale River Station is about 60km north of the Kalumburu/Gibb River Junction, it is a 1 million acre working cattle station. We arrived about 2pm, setup camp and kicked back and watched the campground fill up. It's quite dusty and dry here, compared to HVS campground. But, they have hot showers, unlike HVS which is a major plus! The station staff are friendly, and helpful, the bar looked pretty good, though we didn't make it there. They have a campfire each night for campers to mingle, but we didn't make it there either.

This is a popular stopover for people on their way to Mitchell Plateau and Kalumburu. They have storage facilities here for people wishing to leave their vans and camper trailers whilst they explore these more remote areas.

Opening surprises from Tilly and Grandad

We're still getting used to the sun setting so early, it sets about 5.30pm now that we are in WA. Which means the kids are in bed earlier too!

The days are hot, but the nights and mornings are cool, it's a chilly one tonight!
