Day 72 – Kununurra (Wed July 4th)

It’s a windy, chilly 15 degree morning. It took me about an hour to boil the kettle and cook some toast on the stove outside in this strong wind. We already miss our warm Darwin weather.

The planes were taking off every half hour it seemed for flights over the kimberleys and Purnululu (Bungle Bungles). We tried booking a flight over the bungle bungles whilst in Darwin, but they were all booked out into half of next week.

We were originally going to drive down to the bungle bungles, but we feel as though we are running out of time, so we've decided to give it a miss this time. Hopefully we will get there one day in the future.

We took a drive this morning out past Valentine Springs, to Ivanhoe Crossing and Black rock falls. Ivanhoe Crossing has been closed for the last 2 years, due to the large amount of water that gets released from the Ord River Diversion Dam.

We had a look at Button’s Crossing, which some people were camped by the Ord River. They have a pit toilet here, and a sandy boat ramp. The road we were on today is Parry’s Creek Road and heads into Wyndham. It’s a nice drive which we done 9 years ago, today we went as far as Buttons Crossing, then turned around and headed back into Kununurra.

On the way back in we called into the Zebra Rock Gallery, the kids played on the playground. We browsed through the gallery, and picked up some nice souvieners. They have fish feeding down on the jetty, and a cafe that sells mango smoothies and Devonshire tea.

After lunch we drove out to the Ord River Rum Hoochery, where i enjoyed some Ord River Rum cake and Damon had his socks knocked off with a 3 Rum tasting for $5. They do tours of the distillery for $12, which we didn't do as Cam was asleep in the car.

The kids had a play in the park on the way home, Celebrity Tree Park is a great park opposite our caravan park, with heaps of different trees planted by all kinds of celebrities.

Back at camp we watched the sun set over Lake Kununurra, which was followed by the Full Moon Rise.
