Heading down the west coast!

Cape Keraudren - Day 103 & 104 (Sat/Sun Aug 4th & 5th)

After leaving Port Smith we headed south along the Great Northern Highway to Cape Keraudren.  The drive was quite boring, along a long straight stretch of highway. The talking point on the way was the amount of dead cows on the side of the road, we saw at least 6. The cattle stations here aren't fenced, so they are bound to lose some stock.

We paid our fees at the ranger station on the way into Cape Keraudren, which is about 12km of dirt from the highway. We chose our spot at the Sandy Beach camping area, the water here is a beautiful aqua color, very similar to Roebuck Bay in Broome.

Even though the full moon was 2 nights ago, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the "stairway to the moon" across the tidal flats each night.

We beach combed here, and explored the rock pools at low tide. Some people were catching octopus in these rock pools. Most of the fisherman were catching plenty of whiting and bream of the beach. It was a shame to see see some people keeping buckets of under size fish. Not good for our fish stocks in our oceans!

Heading down the west coast

Port Smith - Day 102 (Fri Aug 3rd)

Today was spent exploring the coastline around Port Smith.  We took a few different sandy tracks which had us popping out at 2 beaches, one either side of the lagoon.

The beach north of the lagoon is lined with these amazing white cliffs, which look awesome against the bright blue water. This is where we spent the morning. Apart from another couple we had the place to ourselves. We ended up coming back in the arvo to sit on the edge of the cliffs and watch the sun go down. It was beautiful.

After lunch we beach combed and collected shells with the kids on the beach south of the lagoon.

At low tide all this water is gone and yesterday we walked out through the mangroves to the lagoon.

We really enjoyed our 2 nights here, and would recommend it to fellow travelers.

Heading Down the West Coast - Broome to Perth (Thur 2nd Aug - Sun 2nd Sept)

Broome to Port Smith  (Day 101 - Thur Aug 2nd)

We headed 160km south of Broome today to Port Smith, which is a top spot.  We had heard about this place from fellow travelers and decided to call in for a night or 2.

After setting up, we walked down to the lagoon. The kids loved having a splash around, but not so much the walk there and back! It's too far they cried.

This is where people launch their boats for fishing whilst at Port Smith.

Carry me home dad!

Every Thursday night from May to September they hold a $5 fish bar b with free entertainment. We joined what seemed like the whole caravan park for a fun night. The local aboriginal band were quite good, they had all the kids up dancing for most of the night.  The fish n chips were yummy, and great value!

Back to Broome - Day (98-100, July 30th - Aug 1st)

After our middle lagoon adventure we headed back to Broome for a few days to stock up and service the car before our trip down the West Coast.

Whilst the truck was in having the tyres rotated and aligned it was discovered that one of the front tyre rods was severely worn and would need replacing. This meant we had to lengthen our stay from 2 nights to 3 nights as we had to wait for parts. The car also got a new awning while we were in Broome, which we will soon be needing for our beach camping at Ningaloo.

On our last evening we had one of the nicest dinners we've had in a long time at the Sunset Bar and Grill at Cable Beach. It was a perfect way to end our time in Broome! We even splurged and sipped a cocktail whilst the sun was setting over the Indian Ocean.
